Most of the materials here have been resurrected from Jim Jennings' (1947-2014) no longer operational website (but archived on Wayback Machine) and YouTube Channel. Jim Jennings was the historian of the Michigan Vietnam Memorial in Mt. Pleasant. His name appears on the last sentence in the plaque picture above. Mr. Jennings passed unexpectedly in 2014. The video below titled "Putting a Face to a Name" interviews Jennings about his project of locating the photograph of each of the over 2700 persons listed on the Michigan Vietnam Memorial in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, a painstaking labor of love that anticipated the virtual Wall of Faces project that is sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which is responsible for the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C.
The author of this website (name at the bottom of the page) expresses deep gratitude for Jim Jennings' scholarly contributions and his unwavering commitment to 'Memory Work' and the Duty to Remember. His efforts have undeniably enriched the cultural fabric of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. She regrets never having had the opportunity to personally thank him for his dedication to preserving the memory of those involved in the Vietnam War, learning of his impactful work only after reading the plaque at the Memorial in Island Park, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, pictured above.
From Jim Jennings' original website, archived here:
"The Michigan Vietnam Memorial was officially dedicated as a State Memorial on July 15, 1990 at Island Park in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. National, state and local dignitaries attended the ceremonies honoring Michigan’s war dead and those still listed as Missing in Action. Surviving family members and veterans were acknowledged. The Memorial was rededicated in September of 1994 with the addition of the bronze statue “War Cry.”
The Michigan Vietnam Memorial began as a project by the Vietnam Veterans chapter in Mt. Pleasant. The vets constructed a walk bridge connecting the main park to the Picken’s ball fields. With the help of volunteers and donations, these veterans built a flag gallery and a series of brick monuments with plaques that bear the names of all Michigan servicemen and one servicewoman who were killed in Vietnam or are still listed as Missing in Action. A one star designation next to the name indicates * Missing in Action. Double stars next to the name indicates **Died in Captivity. An information building was added to the site in 1991 where visitors can acquire information about the Memorial and Vietnam. Island Park is located at the corner of Main and Lincoln in downtown Mt. Pleasant."
Here, the complete Wall of Names, in 15 different panels, as it appears on the Memorial in Island Park, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Click on the first image to see the collection. Plaque #15 includes additional names that were added due to a confusion regarding domicile at time of death. According to Jim Jennings, "Additional names were added to the plaques due to residency mix-ups at time of death. Example: When parents moved out-of-state while soldier was on active duty in Vietnam." Photographs were excavated from Jim Jennings' now defunct website archived on wayback machine, here.
